Wow! So first of all; work is going good. I like the job, the people all seem cool, and the number of hours are great. BUT! Getting to work and getting back home suck! Imagine a circle; down the center is a line with a point at each end where it touches the circle. The bottom point is where I live and the top point is where I work To drive between those two points down the center takes about 10 minutes but if I want to take the bus? I have to travel along the side line of the circle to get to one point to the other. This involves a 1 mile (1.6km) walk to the nearest bus stop, 2 busses, and then another 1.2 mile (1.9km) walk down a road with no sidewalks; just a shoulder on the road for some parts and others an itchy, muddy, field of weeds. This takes between 1.5 and 2 hours ONE WAY.

Now my uncle has been giving me rides when our schedules work out but let’s say I work at 9am; I have to be ready to leave my 6:30 whether I am walking or getting a ride! And if you noticed, I said the number of hours is great, but the actual hours themselves? SUCK! One day I am working 9:00am to 5:30pm, the next I work till 10:30pm and after that I need to be there by 9am again. I am not getting good sleep; it’s not consistent and it’s not enough. I know that comes with the territory of retail but the transportation situation is making it so much worse! By time I get home I have to jump in bed and as soon as I wake up I have to rush to get ready for work and repeat.

If I had a car that would make things work almost perfectly. Money is pretty much not an issue anymore, it’s time! I work on the days that my mechanic friend has off and vice versa. Plus, I have no free time to look for cars online. Yesterday my friend picked me up from work and we looked at a few cars online and drove straight there with cash in hand. It looked perfect! But when we checked it out… it was not as described and he was asking too much for it considering how much work it needed. We talked him down a bit but not enough so even though I wanted it I passed; it sucks but if I wait a little longer I will find something I won't regret. Not to mention the longer it takes the more money I can save which means a better, more reliable car. I just hate asking for rides.... especially when I work late...

Today is my first day off and all I have done is laundry, cleaning, paid bills, and now I am writing this and it’s already 3:30pm and I need to be in bed by 9:30. A couple months ago I had all the time in the world; the clocked ticked so slow! Now it’s spinning out of control! I can't get anything I want to get done taken care of! So I won't be able to write as much for a while. Sucks but really... it’s a good thing. As long as my health keeps up I will be making lots of money and soon have a car and a place of my own. Just got to get through the rough part.

Nothing new with my health by the way. Just a weird dream last night that I kept tripping over my feet and falling. Weird…

Now a joke; Why was 6 afraid of 7?

It wasn’t. Numbers are not sentient and thus incapable of feeling fear.

  1. I would like to know why big box stores operate with these crazy work shifts. Don't they know the morale of the workers would be so much better with standard hours. I was a checker at a store for a while, and the union guaranteed 24 hours a week. This was great, but the hours were spread over six days at four hours each. Then the manager would call me on the one day off a week to come in. When I said I was busy or tired, he would get mad and say the company owned me. In short...no more retail for me.
I hope it works out for you.

  2. they are trying to work with everyone's schedules so the first people in have it fitted for them and then they just have to keep adding employees to fill in the blanks you know? Oh well! And "the company owns me?" that sounds like a call to HR! lol
